Music and culture in the
Clarence Valley, NSW

Surfing The What???

The 'Coldstream' is a street running through the middle of the coastal town of Yamba, NSW.

Once upon a time, a renowned street entertainer had a dream in which performers lined the whole length of this (very steep) thoroughfare, spreading music, colour and movement as they 'surfed' down the slope.

Between 2005 and 2016 we honoured the spirit of that dream by filling Yamba with the sights and sounds of a FREE celebration of music and arts. The event reflected the surf culture, curious discoveries and simple pleasures of a family holiday by the sea that sets the Lower Clarence aside as a destination.

At the heart of the festival experience was a carefully curated live music and dance performance program with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. The live music bill placed local acts alongside quality independent touring artists drawing from world, folk, jazz, soul, roots and electronic music traditions.

Community programs that fed into the festival programming included a blues-rock choir made up of six local primary schools, a high school busking competition, an art walk featuring local indigenous artists and a short film festival showcasing local stories, surf culture and Aboriginal stories from both first time and experienced film-makers.

The festival spread its wings across the Clarence Valley, with the focus on delivering a family-friendly, alcohol-free outdoor event of the highest quality. Our festival reminded residents and revealed to visitors the marvels of this special part of the world, leaving everyone with an enriched sense of place.

And it ain't over yet! While the current festival model takes a breather, the festival organisers are busy creating one-off live music events and cultural activities with a sustainable message. Look out for our events at the monthly Yamba River Markets and at venues across the Clarence Valley.

Live Prawn Productions Inc. is the not-for-profit association that operates the monthly Yamba River Market and produced nine editions of Surfing The Coldstream Festival. We also present live music, film nights, dance performances, youth and community arts events around the Clarence Valley.

The association is made up of a management committee and an ever-growing membership, ensuring broad community involvement in planning and coordinating cultural events in Yamba.

We have an open door policy to new members and welcome inquiries from prospective volunteers.
